MOSSEL BAY NEWS - On Tuesday, 31 December, families and their bikes and their dogs will line up for the 21st Grootbrak Grabadoo.
Once again, this walking/cycling/socialising event will be hosted in the picturesque town of Great Brak River and there’s no better way to see out the old year.
The Grootbrak Grabadoo offers a 4.8km run/walk route and mountain biking options over four different distances – 15km, 35km, 57km and 75.5km.
Race director Alewijn Dippenaar explains that the routes this year take a slightly different direction from previous events, after setting off from the Great Brak Sport Grounds in Lang Street at 06:00 on race day.
The 35km goes past Pep Stores, through farmlands, past the chicken farm and back past Sandhoogte before hitting the tarmac once again.
Cyclists on the longer routes will pass landmarks such as Jonkersberg Road and By Grace Alone, while passing working farms, the village of Friemersheim, and game farms before hitting the tarred road again.
“Those braving the 75.5km route will carry on all the way towards the three bridges where a turn off to the left will take them past a horse farm and into the Friemersheim forest. Then the infamous dipper will ensure that legs are tested to the max.”
Dippenaar says the 75km route is sure to challenge riders, while the 57km track will also make you work those muscles.
“There will be marshals on the route and signs to ensure that the shorter distance racers know where to go, with warning signs at sharp turns and descents.”
Most importantly, he reminds cyclists: “No helmet, no ride.”
Online entries close by 30 December but pre-entries can be made at the sports grounds from 08:00 to 17:00 on 30 December, and late entries on the 31st from 06-06:30.
Beneficiaries of Grootbrak Grabadoo 2024 include the non-profit organisation, House of Valour, Great Brak Cricket Club, and Working on Fire.
Entry forms are available in Great Brak River at Property Connect, Local Choice Pharmacy and Oppispoor, or at Coimbra in York Street, George.
