MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Western Cape has announced that ward by-elections will be held on Wednesday, 25 June, in ward 9, Mossel Bay.
Ward 9 includes D’Almeida, the area around Sao Bras Secondary School, as well as Extension 6, Tarka, Fairview and a portion of De Bakke.
The by-elections are necessary to choose a new ward councillor after the death of ward 9 councillor, Erica Meyer, on 11 April.
The voter registration weekend for the by-elections will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 10 and 11 May, to give the ward residents the opportunity to register and/or update their registration details.
All registration stations in the ward will open at 08:00 and close at 17:00. Residents can go to the following venues:
• D’Almeida Community Hall, c/o Alhof Drive and Mossel Street.
• Sao Bras Secondary School, Skool Street.
• El Shaddai Baptist Church, c/o Kanarie Street and Alhof Drive.
The number of registered voters in ward 9 is currently 4 295.
Although only residents 18 years or older can vote, residents who are 16 years and older are requested to visit the IEC registration stations, either to:
• Register to vote.
• Check and confirm their registration details.
• Update their registration details if they have moved to ward 9 from another ward.
To register, eligible voters must present either a green barcoded ID book, a smartcard ID, or a valid temporary identity certificate.
After the registration weekend, voter registration will continue online on the official IEC website (www.elections.org.za) and in person at the IEC local offices at 5 Powrie Street during office hours until the voters’ roll for the by-elections closes on Friday, 16 May.

The proclamation of the by-elections as well as the opening of candidate nomination is scheduled for Friday, 16 May.
