GREAT BRAK NEWS - Preparations for the annual breaching of the Great Brak Estuary commenced today, 15 September.
According to the Mossel Bay Municipality: “This annual breaching activity is essential to restore the natural estuarine functioning, improve water quality and reduce flood risks.”
The municipality said access to the beach, as well as the section in front of the estuary is closed for public safety.
Members of the public who wish to gain beach access can do so via Hersham or from the Orion Road parking. The public is advised to use the beach towards Klein Brak River until public beach access in Great Brak has been restored.
The breaching is scheduled for Friday 19 September. The sleeve valves at Wolwedans Dam will be fully opened at 05:00 on Friday.
The Department of Water and Sanitation will monitor the subsequent increase in the estuary water level.
The municipality said the breaching is conducted in accordance with the Approved Estuary Mouth Management Plan/Maintenance Management Plan.
