MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In another first for Mossel Bay, the prestigious Africa Premium Triathlon Cup, the SA Standard Triathlon Championship, the Africa Junior Triathlon Cup and the SA Para Triathlon Championship will now take place at Santos Beach between 28 and 29 March.
This major sporting event was set to take place in Nelson Mandela Bay this year, however, on 23 December, Triathlon SA (TSA) announced on its website that this would no longer be the case.
TSA indicated that it would announce the new venue before the end of January.
TSA’s Retief Freysen said the final decision to have the championships held in Mossel Bay was made on Tuesday 27 January, He said the start and the finish of the cycling and running legs of the championships would be in the parking lot at Santos Beach.
Freysen said it is estimated there would be about 280 participants.
“This is a yearly event on the international calendar, and any international athlete (elite and junior) may take part. Athletes earn ranking points, which lead to an Olympic qualification in the end,” he said.
Freysen added that this would be the first time the championships would be held in Mossel Bay and that TSA would like to return for a few more years.
He said more details on the event shall become available in the next two to three weeks.
