MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Several young people embarking on tertiary studies received bursaries from the Mossel Bay Municipality that will cover their full curriculae.
On Friday, 25 January a number of the recipients, many of whom are first year students, received their bursaries from the executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal and the municipal manager, Advocate Thys Giliomee.
"We can only assist financially for the duration of your student life so that you may be allowed to fully concentrate on your studies.
"We recognise that some of you come from a difficult background, and as a municipality we invest in your future with the hope you will make the most of the opportunity awarded to you.
"You must now become Mossel Bay ambassadors. You must become the example of what is possible, what is achievable and you must make yourself proud to become successful South African citizens," the mayor said.
Alderman Levendal congratulated the recipients' parents, family and friends for their support over the years. He added that he hoped to address the students as "Doctor" in the very near future.
On Friday, 25 January a number of the recipients, many of whom are first year students, received their bursaries from the executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal and the municipal manager, Advocate Thys Giliomee.
The mayor also challenged the students to never stop learning, never to grow tired of further learning. "Live up to the example of our municipal manager, a man who has achieved six tertiary degrees. He never stopped learning; now he is teaching others." Advocate Giliomee said that after compulsory conscription he at first enrolled at A university for a Bachelors degree in Accounting, only to change midway to a Bachelors in Economics, before he achieved an Honours degree in Economics while in full-time employment.
"I then realised I enjoyed the law components that formed part of the degree in economics and decided to pursue, firstly the B Proc, then an LLB degree and finally achieved an LLM degree. I challenge you to live your dream, work hard and never give up."
