MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay surfer and diver Johan Swanepoel has warned surfers to avoid Outer Pool at the Point in town, because of higher than usual shark activity this year.
Swanepoel loves the ocean and takes hundreds of photographs of seascapes and underwater ocean activity. He said today: "I have 31 years' experience in and around the ocean off Mossel Bay. "Here is my warning: if you surf, stay away from Outer Pool.
"The Point reef runs deep into the sea, with deep gullies on each of the two sides. They are the perfect places for a shark to attack."
Swanepoel said a surfer had been attacked by a shark there years back. On Monday, 20 July, he said: "I saw a great white breach there and this past weekend we found a seal on the rocks that had been attacked by a very large shark. The wounds were so extensive, it had to be euthanised."
Swanepoel said he felt Outer Pool should be closed for surfing for the next three months. "Keep yourself safe and go surf somewhere else," he advised.
Besides notifying the Mossel Bay Advertiser, Swanepoel also put a notice up on his Facebook page, swimmingsharkville.
