MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Law enforcement officers in Mossel Bay are much more easily discernible from their traffic officer colleagues as the vehicles they use to enforce municipal by-laws have been properly branded.
"Until recently, law enforcement officers used mostly unmarked white municipal vehicles in the execution of their duties. However, this led to complaints from time to time as residents often did not realise that the white vehicle parked in front of their home was in fact used by municipal law enforcement officers who were attending to their complaints," the head of Mossel Bay Municipality Law Enforcement, Henry Williamson explained.
He said the new livery now clearly identifies the law enforcement vehicle and that this enhances the efficacy of the officers.
Both the Mossel Bay Municipality traffic officers and law enforcement officers wear blue uniforms and that the public may find it difficult to distinguish between the two functions. Law enforcement officers enforces municipal by-laws and are by law not allowed to enforce road traffic violations.
"Law enforcement officers will typically attend to and investigate the complaints about transgressions of municipal by-laws that are received from the public. The new livery will help to clearly identify the law enforcement vehicles that law enforcement officers use when performing their duties," municipal spokesperson Colin Puren said.
