MOSSEL BAY NEWS FLASH - The KwaNonqaba police were requested to look for a lone male who is suspected of arson.
Five fires were started yesterday afternoon and firefighters had to employ a spotter plane and helicopter to water bomb the fire that raged at the refuse dump.
At first reports were received of a fire in an area behind Pinnacle Point. Shortly thereafter a fire was reported in the clump of eucalyptus trees behind South Cape College. Thereafter a fire was reported behind the refuse dump site.
This fire soon spread to the refuse site itself and firefighters had to work hard to contain it to the site and keep Louis Fourie Road open to traffic.
Early on Wednesday morning the municipality employed earth moving equipment in an effort to reach the smouldering deeper lying fires.
The Municipal Manager Dr Michele Gratz said the recurring fires at the municipal refuse site is a matter for concern and that law enforcement agencies were requested to increase their patrols in the area.
“We expect tenders for the regional refuse site behind PetroSA to be published before the end of January. This site will serve several municipalities and is the responsibility of the Eden District Municipality. As soon as that site is fully functional the site on Louis Fourie Road will be closed down,” Dr Gratz said.
