MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The project to replace Da Nova's internal water reticulation system has been successfully completed. Industry specialists in trenchless technology, Neil Lyners and Associates, was appointed by the Mossel Bay Municipality to manage this 20-week project that commenced in 2022 and was completed at the end of January 2023.
Pipe bursting is a trenchless method of replacing an existing underground pipe. A machine pulls a bursting head through the old pipe, which fractures it by pushing the pieces into the surrounding soil.
Simultaneously, a new pipe of the same or larger size is pulled in its place. This process allows for the replacement of pipes without the need for excavation of the entire length of the pipe.
Due to Da Nova's hard ground conditions, conventional open trench excavations would have resulted in additional project costs and especially damages to the existing infrastructure.
The project consisted of replacing the existing asbestos cement water pipes, which were old and prone to frequent bursting with high-density polyethylene pipes. At the same time, the existing reticulation network was augmented to ensure sufficient water supply.
The project value is just over R9 million during which 99 house connections were seen to and 1 520m of pipeline was laid through pipe bursting.
