MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay's own "Oscar Awards" were held on Saturday evening, 19 November, at the Santos Express conference room at Santos Beach.
Deputy mayor, Alderman Cliffie Bayman, attended the awards and gave a speech, urging the models and actors to be role models.

He referred to entertainer, Queen Latifah, who once said in an address to graduates: "You need to keep searching for a role model? No. You are the role model. Now go out there and make a difference. Be that difference."
The local Oscar Awards are held each year by Gemini Model and Talent Agency which secures jobs for locals on TV, in movies and in clothing catalogues, among others.
Roles secured for the actors over the past year included ones on the popular TV soapie Sewende Laan, the movies Hart in die Bos and My Father My Responsibility, a Midas vehicle accessory chain store TV commercial and Diepe Waters on kykNET.
The models and actors also perform at local functions and Gemini offers them acting and modelling workshops with experienced actors, which included television and movie actor Dewald Reynecke, veteran actress and voice trainer Pauline O'Kelly and Getroud met Rugby soapie actress Vicky Kente over the past year.
There were monologues, dancing and musical numbers at the Oscars.
The MC of the event was Vuyolwethu Mfumbe, who is an activist against gender violence, a model, actor, multiple pageant winner and pageant organiser.
Mfumbe requested the municipality to increase its support of the arts. He pointed out that not all young people were good at sport. He said the municipality supported sport well, but the arts needed more backing.
The winners of the top awards were: Junior Actress, Kay Lee Botha; Senior Actress, Rochelle van Straaten; Toddler Top Model, Johané Dercksen; Junior Top Model Sanchia Petersen; Senior Top Model, Courtney Williams; Miss Junior Photogenic, Reese Lubbe; and Miss Senior Photogenic, Alicia Heunis.
