Prayers for a peaceful election

ELECTION NEWS - The work at the Western Cape IEC Results Centre in Cape Town started bright and early this morning with an interdenominational prayer meeting.

Provincial Electoral Officer Courtney Sampson stressed that the elections are taking place within a very important religious space for many denominations.

"Christians have just concluded their pass over, the Jewish community has celebrated their Pesach, and we are in the Holy month of Ramadan for the Muslim community. With this as a backdrop we call for tolerance and a peaceful election," Sampson said.

Several faith leaders, such as the Most Reverend Archbishop Stephen Brislin (Catholic Faith), Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba‎, the moderator of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Western and Southern Cape, Dr Braam Lategan, Taheri Matthew of the Bahari and Rabbi Mickey Glass, among others. Faith leaders called for tolerance and peace to prevail as millions of people go to the polls today.
