ATHLETICS NEWS - Two budding athletes from Knysna recently took part in the Athletics South Africa (ASA) national championships, representing SWD and making family, friends and the community at large proud.
The ASA National Track and Field Championships took place between 23 and 25 March in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The championships highlighted the tenacity and the talent of young athletes from all around South Africa.
The two Knysna athletes were selected at the ASWD High Schools Athletics Championships at the De Jager Stadium in Oudtshoorn earlier this year.
Chris Jacobs, a learner from Concordia High School, was one of the two and represented Athletics South Western Districts (ASWD) in the boys U18 400m at the national championships.
Laticha Sinclair, from Knysna Secondary School, was the second Knysna athlete to represent ASWD at the championships, participating in the girls U18 1500m. It was the first time for both athletes to participate at a national level. Unfortunately, they did not go through to the final rounds, but both were good sports and were still beaming with pride that they were able to represent their schools and their province.
Concordia High School and Knysna Secondary School both credit the support of Kilt and the Knysna Marathon Club for their generous financial support to make the dreams of these young athletes come true.
The Athletics SWD team from the respective schools thanked their management for safe transportation and the high quality accommodation that made the athletes' experience all the more enjoyable. The ASWD team returned home with seven silver and five bronze medals.
