NATIONAL NEWS - The teenager appeared in court for his admission to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, where he will undergo 30 days of psychiatric observation.
Western Cape National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed the development.
The teenager faces 15 charges, including sexual grooming of a child, compelled sexual assault, sexual exploitation of a child, creating child pornography, exposing or displaying pornography to a child by means of an image, unlawful and intentional distribution and possession of child pornography, and cruelty to animals.
He also faces charges relating to a data message allegedly inciting damage to property or violence.
Arrest followed investigation
According to Caxton Network News, the teenager was arrested on August 17 following an investigation by the SAPS National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations team.
The investigation involved several SAPS units as well as US law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations.
The teenager is also suspected of having links to the online network known as ‘764’, which has been associated with the exploitation and coercion of minors into online sexual abuse, animal cruelty and other violent activities.
The allegations have not been tested in court.
Case postponed
The teenager’s case has been postponed to 5 October.
As the accused is a minor, his identity cannot be published.
