MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The 2026 Africa Triathlon Premium/Junior Cup and South African Standard and Para Triathlon Championships are almost here and are set to take place on Santos Beach on Sunday 29 March.
The athletes of these two major events are set to register and be briefed at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex in Mossel Bay tomorrow, 28 March, between 15:00 and 18:00.
The race briefings will occur between 16:00 and 18:15, with specific time slots depending on your group category.
There will also be a course familiarisation on Santos Beach tomorrow. The elites and U23 are set for 13:45 to 14:50 and the junior and para category for 14:20 to 15:30.
On Sunday, the first competition to take place will be the SA Champs age groups and aquabike standard, which is a 1.5km swim, a 40km cycle and 10km run. This will start at 07:00 for the male participants and 07:10 for the female participants.
The Africa Cup junior sprint, which is a 750m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run, will start at 09:45 for the boys and 10:30 for the girls.
The SA Champs para sprint, a 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run, will begin at 10:45 for all participants.
There will then be a prize-giving at 12:00.
The Africa Cup elite/U23 standard, a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and a 10km run, will start at 12:30 for the men and at 12:40 for the women.
The prize-giving for this event will be at 15:15.
There will be temporary road closures in effect from 04:00 to 15:30 on Sunday:
• George Road (closed)
• Bland Street (closed)
• Muir Street (closed)
• Point Road and a section of Marsh Street (lane restriction)
There will also be no swimming at Santos Beach during these hours.
Speaking to Mossel Bay Advertiser in January, Triathlon SA’s Retief Freysen said: "This is a yearly event on the international calendar, and any international athlete (elite and junior) may take part. Athletes earn ranking points, which lead to an Olympic qualification in the end."
This is the first time this will take place in Mossel Bay.
