SPCA meets with Mossel Bay Municipality about pig farms

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Following a meeting with the Mossel Bay Municipality, the Garden Route SPCA said there has been positive progress regarding the situation involving the piggeries in KwaNonqaba.

The pig farms in KwaNonqaba have been the site of ongoing welfare issues, especially after heavy rains, as the soil is clay and becomes waterlogged.

The Garden Route SPCA has paid multiple visits to the site following the heavy rains late in July, and found the waterlogged land covered in mud and faeces.

The SPCA said the meeting was organised after concerns were raised about the conditions and the future of the animals, to discuss the situation and the way forward.

"The municipality has been assisting in co-ordinating the next steps and will be arranging further meetings with the relevant role players so that the matter can be addressed collectively," said the SPCA.

"This will include engagement with the Department of Rural Development, which initially initiated the process relating to the movement of the pigs, as well as any other relevant authorities required to help determine a sustainable way forward."

It added that in the meantime, the holes in the boundary walls have been closed, addressing the immediate concerns relating to the containment of the pigs. It also said that the farmers have expressed their appreciation for the assistance received and are now awaiting the outcome of the discussions with the relevant authorities.

"The matter remains ongoing, and further information will be shared once these meetings have taken place and a final way forward has been established," it said.
