KWANONQABA NEWS - Dawite Wolekemo (36), the man who was shot in the legs in an armed robbery at Hemper Supermarket in Adriaans Avenue, KwaNonqaba, on Friday 16 January, is currently recovering in hospital.
Both Dawite and his brother, Tigistu, are employees at Hemper Supermarket.
According to Tigistu, they had just left a funeral and were returning to the shop at about 17:30 on Friday when the robbery took place.
In some CCTV footage shared with Mossel Bay Advertiser, three men can be seen entering the shop just before Tigistu and Dawite arrive in their car.
Warrant Officer Chris Spies, the Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson, told the Advertiser that one of the suspects had reportedly been in possession of a firearm.
In the footage, Dawite is seen running up to the shop’s gate and trying to keep the three men locked inside, but struggles.
During this altercation, Tigistu runs to the shop next door, grabs some glass bottles of cooldrink and throws them against the gate in an attempt to ward the robbers off back into the shop.

“I was also scared, but I was just trying to save someone,” he said.
The men managed to push past Dawite at the gate and shot him in the legs before fleeing the scene, taking some cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash with them.
Tigistu says the men also shot his car.
The KwaNonqaba Police arrested the three suspects shortly afterwards. They made their first appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court today, 19 January.
Spies said the investigations are ongoing.
