MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEOS - Sibongiseni Mpini is the 2022 top matric at Hillcrest High School in Mossel Bay, with an average of 85%.
"I am extremely pleased with my results, but a little anguished I didn't get the marks expected in three subjects.
"But they are good enough to get me admission into the University of the Western Cape to study Astro Physics."
Sibongiseni says he had great support from his teachers at Hillcrest High.
He wants to praise one specifically, his physics teacher, Marian Bester.
"I would often go and study in her garage and she allowed me to use her laptops to do extra work at home. I really appreciate her efforts."
Sibongiseni is also a keen soccer player and was the captain for the U17 team. He is off to the University of the Western Cape next week to start an exciting, new chapter in his life.
Anna Ncube, who was born in South Africa, but doesn't have a birth certificate, had an uphill battle with legal documents which caused a lot of stress before the matric exams.
Despite this, Anna managed to achieve the second best average of 79% at Hillcrest.
She said: "I was extremely nervous and excited to write the final exams, because I was writing for my life.
"For me, getting my matric results means that my life is starting now. It means I can study any course that I want to and get a job." She wants to study architecture, which is her first passion, but is also considering medicine. She says she misses the routine of going to school, "because now I have too much time to think". To keep busy, Anna likes to draw and read novels.
