MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Surf Life Saving Club (MBSLC) prizegiving was held last week and the lifesaving sportsperson of the year award for 2017 went to Rudi Boer.
The Nipper award for the year went to Chané Reinecke.
A number of awards were handed out to lifeguards who did particularly well at the national championships and to those who had excelled locally and shown themselves to be good citizens.
Lifeguards also receive recognition for service excellence during the season and for attending to the "not so serious" injuries on our beaches.
For example, one lifeguard was rewarded for treating about 38 people for blue bottle stings.
Children can start off as Nippers at the MBSLC and then progress to junior lifeguard stage at the age of 14.
From there they progress to fully-fledged senior lifeguards. Those who coach the children and lifeguards do so on a voluntary basis and give generously of their time.
The Nippers receive excellent hands-on training and have the opportunity to compete for their Level One to Level Three Awards.
The junior lifesavers also have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience on the beach.
There is the opportunity for Nippers and junior, senior and master lifesavers to compete in the South African championships.
Many of the past club members have had careers as professional lifeguards on resorts and cruise ships.
The fees are minimal. Nippers and lifeguards have their practice sessions every Sunday at Dias Beach.
The club thanks every sponsor that has donated generously, every parent that has given of their time and every lifegaurd for keeping beachgoers safe.
The MBSLC often sells boerewors rolls and cooldrinks to raise funds for the club. If you are able to donate any ingredients, the club would be extremely grateful.
