MOSSEL BAY SPORT NEWS - Mossel Bay Laser Run boasts with two athletes leaving for Budapest on 1 September. Johan Windt and Tonya Schoeman, only 11 years of age will be joined by Ulene Visser and Bertus Myburgh, both from George to participate on an International level in Budapest in September.
Windt, Visser and Schoeman qualified for the SAMPA Team (A- Team) and Myburgh for the Presidents Team (B-Team) in May this year at the SA Laserrun Championships.
They all will now compete at the UIPM Laserrun World championships in Budapest.
Visser and Windt both participated in the World Championships last year, receiving silver and bronze medals in their age categories.
The sport not only requires exceptional fitness but a steady hand and eye to shoot the target. The athletes have 50 seconds to hit their target five times with a laser pistol from a distance of 5m for seniors and 3m for juniors. Only after successfully hitting the target can the athlete continue to either run 400m or 800m laps depending on age. Athletes from eight to 80 years of age can participate in this dynamic sport.
Windt is the Laser Run coach in Mossel Bay and urges all interested parties to join the daily training at 14:30 at the Riebeeck Stadion in Mossel Bay. Athletes only need running shoes and comfortable clothing for training purposes. No previous experience is required. The club will provide the laser pistols and targets.
