NATIONAL NEWS - A family was rushed to hospital following a major crash on Robert Broom Drive over the weekend.
According to Welma Landman, a family member, the Van Greunens and a friend of their daughter were driving home on Friday evening, 21 February at about 18:00 after picking up a birthday cake for seven-year-old CJ van Greunen.
They were heading towards Rant-en-Dal when the accident happened at the fairly new four-way stop at the R28 on- and off-ramp.
“The police were chasing someone and the man did not stop. He hit the family from behind at the stop sign. When he tried to reverse, he hit another woman. We believe he was under the influence of alcohol,” Landman explained.

A statement from Netcare 911’s media liaison officer, Shawn Herbst said their paramedics responded to the accident at 18:27.
“Reports from the scene indicated that an SUV and two cars were involved in a collision,” Herbst’s statement read.
The medics found five people injured in the collision; their injuries ranged from moderate to serious.
“The seriously injured patient was treated on scene by an advanced life support paramedic. Once stabilised all the patients were transported to hospital by ambulance for further treatment,” read Herbst’s statement.
Landman elaborated by saying that mechanical equipment was used to free Ziane van Greunen,17, from the wreckage. She had suffered a broken pelvis. She is currently in hospital undergoing treatment.

CJ had to get stitches for the cut on his head, and his mother, Elmarie, suffered concussion.
Boytjie van Greunen and Ziane’s friend both had multiple bruises, and Ziane suffered whiplash.
The family was taken to a private hospital for further care.
Landman also said that according to her knowledge the man who had driven into the family was arrested on scene.
A post by Mogale Response Services said ER24, Emer-G-Med, West Rand District Municipality Fire and Rescue, local police, Apcan Security, First Help and the sector Community Policing Forum members were on scene to assist.
