MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Eight junior surfers of The Surfer Kids NPO in Mossel Bay competed in the South African Junior Surfing Tour, hosted in Cape Town from 20 to 22 February.
The surfers competed in the tour's first event, the O'Neill Cold Water Junior Classic.
For many of the participating athletes, this marked their first appearance on a national surfing stage.
The surfers faced intense competition and exceptionally high standards during the competition, and although the results were not what The Surfer Kids team had hoped for, the experience was nevertheless invaluable.
"After years of steady development, it is no surprise that many of our surfers are now performing at a highly competitive level," said Chuma Magusha, manager of The Surfer Kids NPO.
"Competing at this level provided clarity on where impro- vements can be made and confirmed something equally important: our surfers have the talent and ability to compete among the best."
With renewed determination, the team is already preparing to return to the next event much stronger.
The surfers who continue to compete in the South African Junior Surfing Tour will participate in four out of the six events hosted across the country.
Through their performances in the water, they will collect points that contribute toward eligibility for selection into the South Africa Junior Team, which will provide an opportunity to represent South Africa at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Championships in September.
