MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The two students the Mossel Bay Police had arrested following the protest action outside the gates of the South Cape College Mossel Bay Campus yesterday, 31 August, are expected to make their first appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 2 September.
This was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Southern Cape Police, Warrant Officer Chris Spies.
About 150 students protested against an alleged lack of funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas), which they say they were meant to receive at the beginning of the academic year in February.
Now, seven months later, the students say they received little to no communication from the college or Nsfas regarding their queries, and are struggling to afford the costs of accommodation and other necessities.
Two of the students were arrested for public violence when the protest escalated with the burning of some tyres, resulting in a response from not only the police, but the Mossel Bay Municipality’s law enforcement, the K9 unit, Public Order Protection Unit and the fire department.
Mossel Bay Advertiser has sent questions to Mossel Bay’s South Cape College and Nsfas, but has not yet received a response. Official comment from both institutions will be added to this story once received.
