MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The person who died at The Point in Mossel Bay yesterday, 18 May, is a 79-year-old man who reportedly fell from some rocks into the sea.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), its Mossel Bay Station 15 duty crew were activated at about 16:55 following eyewitness reports that a man had fallen into the water. Emergency services also responded.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said while the emergency teams were en route, eyewitnesses reported that a local had entered the water and managed to bring the man to shore.
Some bystanders immediately initiated CPR.
“On arrival at the scene, the NSRI rescuers and paramedics continued with the attempts to resuscitate the man.”
Despite their extensive efforts, however, the man was declared dead.
His body was taken into the care of the police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
The Mossel Bay Police have opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The man’s identity is not yet known.
