MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The management of KwaNonqaba Police Station has congratulated the station's detectives on helping to secure sentences in criminal cases including theft, malicious damage to property, attempted arson and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
KwaNonqaba Police Station spokes-person, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, provided the following information on the convictions:
Malicious damage to property
A 27-year-old man was sentenced by the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court to three years' direct imprisonment for malicious damage to property.
Vuyile Stuurman was found guilty in February this year and sentenced on 1 April.
Stuurman set a man's vehicle alight in Calitzdorp Crescent, Asla Park in Mossel Bay on 4 August 2023.
The cost of damage was valued at about R200 000.
The complainant in the case, who wished not to be named, said he hoped Stuurman would turn his life around and receive any help he may need during those three years of imprisonment.
Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
Solumzi Magusha (41) and Asenathi Sinxo (35) were both found guilty and sentenced on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
On 6 January last year, the two hit a man on the head with an axe, leaving an open wound.
The incident took place in Adriaans Avenue, KwaNonqaba, just after 12:00.
Magusha and Sinxo were both sentenced to pay a R2 000 fine or to three months' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.
Attempted arson
Austin Bukani (26) was found guilty and sentenced by the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court on a charge of attempted arson.
Just after 02:00 on 6 September last year, Bukani attempted to set a shop alight in Asla Park.
Bukani was sentenced to pay a fine of R10 000 or to three months' imprisonment, suspended for three years.
Driving under influence of alcohol
A 33-year-old man was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, suspended for three years or to pay a fine of R10 000, after he was found guilty of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Sentencing of Dumisani Mlunguzi took place in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court. He had been driving along Mayixhale Street, KwaNonqaba, at about 07:00 on 11 February last year when he was arrested.
Theft
Wentzel Bezuidenhout (42) was sentenced in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court for theft.
Bezuidenhout was found guilty of the theft, which took place on 12 September last year.
He was sentenced to pay a fine of R8 000 or to eight months' imprisonment, suspended for three years, on the condition he is not convicted of theft during that period.
