MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The ACVV Mossel Bay will start a community garden at the Tao Tao Crèche in D'Almeida, Ext 8, today, for Mandela Day.
The ACVV wants to allow community members the opportunity to bring their own shovels or pitchforks to help till the ground and prepare it for planting.
The event itself will take place from 10:00 to 12:00, but the organisers say the garden will live on and they hope community involvement will grow with it.
"We will also be planting a few plants that have already been donated to us. We are hoping to assist Tao Tao with food supplies for the children attending the crèche, but also to supplement the food parcels we are already donating to community members in D'Almeida," the ACVV said.
The organisation also hopes the garden will encourage unemployed persons to start their own gardens at home and to become involved in this garden to promote a sense of mastery and independence.
The crèche is supplying two shovels and a pitchfork. Donations of soil and seeds were also received. The ACVV said it still needs a water tank to supplement the water supply, which may otherwise be a burden on Tao Tao in the long run. More shovels, pitchforks, other equipment and fertiliser are also needed to maintain the garden.
Following Mandela Day, work in the garden will also take place on various Saturdays. Keep an eye on the Facebook page, ACVV Mosselbaai, to see which days garden activities will take place.
