MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The recent Running with Wolves raised R2 510 for the SPCA.
The 5km run and raffle organised by Zeppelin's bar on 30 September raised enough money to buy 200kg of animal food for the Garden Route SPCA's Mossel Bay facility.
The subsequent beach clean-up removed five bags full of litter from Mossel Bay's coastline and roadsides.
The event started at 07:00 with free hot drinks for the participants.
The run joined the beach at Kloof Street, followed the coastline around the Point then headed uphill before returning to Zeppelin's.
The weather was perfect, sunny but not overly hot, and many participants had praise for the good organisation of the run: marshals and help from the traffic police made the route simple and safe.
Delicious waffles and fruit salads were available at the finish.
A prize giving and raffle followed. Prizes included cage dives, a bar tab, wine and more, making it well worth participating.
The day ended with Zeppelin's hosting its first live band and offering half-price cocktails.
A number of the enthusiastic participants in the recent Running with Wolves fun run that benefitted the local SPCA.
"On the beach clean-up I was struck by how many cigarette butts littered the roadsides and shoreline. We removed hundreds.
"They're a fire hazard, an eyesore and can choke wildlife. People need to dispose of them responsibly."
Jenni Webster, the chief organiser, arranged the event because she "just wanted to give back to Zeppelin's and Mossel Bay as well, to this beautiful community", before she leaves to work in Switzerland for a year.
Jenni hopes monthly fundraiser events will follow after she has left, raising money to fund animal shelters for the SPCA and help the elderly in the community, but nothing is set in stone yet.
