Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Lithemba Solomon was the top matric at Indwe Secondary School.
She achieved the following results: IsiXhosa home language 82%, English first additional language 82%, Business Studies 96%, Accounting 83%, Life Orientation 88%, Mathematics 58% and Tourism 86%. Her aggregate was 82,14%.
Mossel Bay Advertiser asked her a few questions.
What was your winning formula?
Having a clear motive. The school had its goal of obtaining a pass rate of at least 70% but I had my own goal. I was aiming for seven distinctions, one being a 100% in Business Studies. Another advantage is consistency. I am passionate and that really fuelled me.
Who was your inspiration for your studies?
My fear of failure inspires me to work hard. Hearing about learners before me and how they did also inspired me because I thought, "If they could, why can't I?"
What are your plans for the future?
I am planning to do a BCom Law at the university that wins my heart.
What advice do you give to those writing matric this year?
Block out other people's experiences because they instil fear in you. Have your own goal. Be selfish; don't mind the school's goal because that isn't your business this year. Focus more on how varsities are going to view your average, because it's your average they're interested in. Start working on "how many" distinctions. Lastly, have a motive that will drive you throughout the year.
Did Covid-19 and load shedding have an impact on your studies?
Yes, an immense impact. There were certain chapters that required prior knowledge for greater understanding - prior knowledge that I didn't have because I was stuck in lockdown due to the pandemic.
During Grade 12, I would have plans to wake up from my afternoon nap to study when my folks were asleep because I concentrated better at night, but I would wake up to a pitch-black house because of load shedding, which sometimes discouraged me and I would end up going back to bed.
What are your interests?
I love watching reality TV and YouTube vlogs. I love horses, tennis, boxing and I would love to play the piano one day. I'm also obsessed with Instagram.
I hope to get recognition from brands so that I can become a certified digital content creator by 2028. I'm really into fashion, lifestyle and interior design.
