SPORT NEWS - South Africa’s Commonwealth 2022 bowls squad will be using The Wanderers Club in Illovo for squad practice from April 9 to 10.
There will be a total of 26 players attending the practice, and Wanderers Club has extended an invitation to the public to attend and watch the practices on either day and have free access to Wanderers’ food and beverage facilities, including Chariots Family bar and restaurant.
The Commonwealth Games runs from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, UK, and is held every four years.
Five men and five women will be participating in four different disciplines: Fours and Singles, and Trips and Pairs. SA will also be sending a disabled team to compete.
The first team squad camp of the year was held in February, with 12 squad players competing. There were three Fours teams. All three teams won their sections.
In the finals, the team of Jason Evans, Pierre Breitenbach, Brendan Ferns and Bradley Robinson played against Wayne Rittmuller, Colleen Piketh, Morgan Muvhango and Bridget Calitz. Evans’ team won the tournament and Rittmuller’s team finished in the fourth position. The team of Anneke Snyman, Esme Kruger, Nici Neal and Thabelo Muvhango finished in the top 10.
Also in preparation for the games, players participated individually in the Inter-District, where Ferns won gold, Neal and Muvhango won silver, and Kruger and Robinson won bronze.
Before the camp, there was the BSA Masters event where Evans and Piketh won gold and Neal and Calitz took bronze.
