MOSSEL BAY NEWS - "Explosions" were heard on the N2 highway near the Langeberg Mall on Wednesday night and flames and smoke could be seen from a long way off.
These were caused when a tyre on a truck burst and caught fire.
The truck was carrying a tank of diesel fuel.
No loss of life
There was no loss of life in the incident. The driver managed to exit the vehicle and escape, unscathed.
Mossel Bay Fire Rescue and Disaster Management Services responded to a call-out at 20:11, a municipal statement noted.
The municipality stated that the sound of explosions was the rest of the tyres popping, when exposed to the heat of the fire.
Differential mount
"The wheels on the differential mount of the truck all burnt. The fuel in the tanker compartment never burnt."
The fire was successfully extinguished by 20:51, the municipality stated.
Lanes of the N2
Both lanes of the N2 between Dana Bay and the Langeberg Mall off-ramp, in the direction of George, were closed temporarily.
Traffic was diverted on to Louis Fourie Road. The right-hand lane of the N2, in the direction of George, was re-opened at 21:53 and the other lane, later.
