MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The last penguin release of the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre (SAPREC) for 2018 is set for 26 December.
Seven African penguins will be released on this, the sixth release for the year. More than 32 penguins were released this year.
A volunteer of the centre said: "It is amazing how much good work is done at the small centre to help the critically endangered African penguin, as well as other seabirds."
The penguins will be released at Fransmanshoek and the plan is to release them at 10:00 on 26 December. See the SAPREC facebook page, @saprecmb, for an update on the date and time. It is in the best interest of the penguins that the weather and tides are favourable.
Although seven penguins will be released, there are still many more penguins at the centre. Members of the public are most welcome to visit them by appointment only with Carol Walton of SAPREC.
There are two feeding slots - one at 09:00 and the other at 14:00 - daily, seven days a week.
A small entry fee of R40 for an adult and R10 per child is requested.
The centre is in Mossdustria.
Visit the website, www.saprec.org, for further details.
If you come across a penguin on the beach, it is in trouble.
Do not touch it or try to put it back into the ocean. Contact Carol (082 364 3382) and she will respond immediately to your call.
