NATIONAL NEWS - African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Gwede Mantashe says the party will work with the private sector to rescue the economy in the wake of recent job cuts in various sectors.
On Monday, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) revealed that 80,000 jobs have been shed in the sector in the last five years and more cuts are expected.
The union is calling on President Jacob Zuma to remove Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane.
Mantashe says the mining sector must be “managed properly”.
“There must be a long-term plan about mining to make it work and contribute to the economy that is in trouble and that is the position we have taken. We said the minister must not deal with the industry as if he is fighting with his peers. He must provide leadership to the industry.”
The call by the NUM, a key ally of the ruling ANC, highlights growing political divisions in the party months ahead of a key conference where it will elect a new leader to succeed President Zuma.
