LIFESTYLE NEWS - Don’t hate the dentist. When last did you see a dentist? If it’s been longer than you’d like to admit, you are not alone. While 67% of people recognise the need to visit a dentist, only 42% tend to seek an appointment or advice.
The reason is because 75% of adults experience some degree of ‘dentist fear’. But it’s time to face your fears and look after your beautiful smile for World Oral Health Day (20 March 2017).

You wouldn’t have to fear the dentist as much if you maintain a good oral care routine. After all, prevention is better than cure.
It is estimated that 90% of the world’s population will suffer from some form of dental disease in their lifetime but, much of this could be easily be treated or prevented with a good oral care routine.
It is never too late to start taking regular care of your teeth and gums.
So how do you keep your smile sparkling?
- Watch what you eat and drink. You could also consider taking calcium and vitamin D supplements, as they help with bone density, strengthening and keeping your teeth healthy
- You should brush your teeth twice a day, once after breakfast and once before you go to bed, for approximately two minutes at a time, and if possible after every meal
- Replace your toothbrush every two to five months or sooner if the bristles start wearing out
- Do not forget to rinse and clean your toothbrush after use, and store it upright to allow it to air dry
- Floss once a day. Flossing isn’t there to replace brushing your teeth – rather it’s a complementary method to achieving optimal dental hygiene by reaching those difficult areas that a normal toothbrush can’t reach
- Use an alcohol-free mouthwash to flush out the bacteria a toothbrush cannot reach. It can also help maintain strong teeth and a pleasant-smelling breath
- An annual dental check is essential and if possible visit your dentist twice a year – a good dental clean will last six months before you need return for another check-up
