MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Grades 5, 6 and 7 girls from Imekhaya and Erika primary schools had a wonderful, fun time playing touch rugby on Santos Beach on Women's Day last week.
This was part of an SA Rugby initiative to encourage girls to play rugby and events were also held on two other beaches in the Southern Cape on the same day.
There were many laughs as the girls grappled with the oval ball and one of the teachers commented good-naturedly, "This is all new to them", as they threw the ball into the air as if playing netball.
When the children arrived at the beach early in the morning they took the opportunity to jump into the sea in their clothes and many of them were wet and shivering as the rugby started and their clothes became covered in sand when they fell down.
But they soon dried off in the lovely, sunny weather and had a taste of what rugby is about in an informal, enjoyable way.
