Meiringspoort Half Marathon
Area - Oudtshoorn
12 October 2013, 07:52 at De Rust
The Meiringspoort 21.1 km was the brain child of a group of women runners who took to the farm roads in the early mornings way back in 1993. The first race was held on the 23rd of October in that same year. The entry fee was R18 and a temporary license a meagre R8. 310 athletes took part in this race, 286 finishing within the cut off time. During the first three years Isaac Opperman from Wellington was the winner. The route record, 1:04:06 set by him in 1994, has not been improved since. Previous winners include Principal Fana, Lindile Tokota, Jan Frieslaar and Friedel Maans.

Voting Poll
All too often, society is shocked by the levels of child or animal abuse rife in our community. Are we as a society becoming numb, even blasé about the obvious neglect and abuse suffered by women, children and animals at the hands of the perpetrators of violence? Are we teaching our children that abuse and violence is an acceptable alternative to decent family values?
YES: When children see and experience violence as a matter of fact, they are to accept it as norm.
Knysna-Plett Herald 0%
NO: Violence and abuse is unacceptable and should not be tolerated in a society that calls itself civilised.
