R7.4 million project kicks off
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A R7.4-million project to provide basic water and sanitation services at several informal settlements across the Mossel Bay municipal area has commenced under the management of the Mossel Bay Municipality.

Known as the Access to Basic Services project, it forms part of the programme of the Department of Human Settlements of the Western Cape. The areas to be serviced have been identified on the basis of their ability to be integrated with existing municipal water and sewerage networks.

"We are very thankful that this project has now commenced as it will undoubtedly create better and healthier living conditions and contribute to the social upliftment of the people that will benefit from it.

"It will also help to combat many of the diseases that often occur in informal settlements where there are not proper sanitation facilities or access to water.

The onus will be on the beneficiaries to look well after the new facilities," said the Executive Mayor, Alderlady Marie Ferreira.
She said that the services can unfortunately not be extended to all informal settlements in Mossel Bay, as the terrain at some is of such a nature that they cannot be connected to the existing sewerage networks.

The project will entail the construction of a water and sanitation facility for every five households in the areas concerned.
Each facility will have a flush toilet, as well as a water tap and a wash basin. The units will be fitted with padlocks and each of the families will receive their own key. The units comply with the national standard for sanitation services and exceed the standard for the supply of water.

The project will also provide temporary employment for 20 local unemployed people. The possibility of a separate project to maintain and manage the units, and which will create permanent employment, is also being investigated.

A total of 608 units will be built at informal settlements at KwaNonqaba, Asla Park, Asazani/Izinyoka, Wolwedans, Powertown, Ruiterbos and Brandwacht. The project objective is to complete the project before the start of the annual builders' holiday in December 2012.
